Digitally Sign a PDF with a Certificate โ€” Free, Private, In Your Browser

Apply a real cryptographic signature using your own certificate file, or create a self-signed one. If anyone changes the document afterwards, PDF readers flag it. Your private key never leaves your device.

Digital Signature (Certificate)

Sign with a real certificate: tamper-evident, not just a picture. Do this as the last step; any change afterwards breaks the signature.

A Signature That Proves Nothing Changed

A drawn or typed signature is only a picture. A digital signature is a cryptographic seal: it fingerprints the whole document, signs that fingerprint with your certificate’s private key, and stores the result inside the PDF. Open it in Acrobat or another reader and it shows whether the file is unchanged since you signed.

Bring your own .p12 or .pfx certificate, or let the tool create a self-signed one in seconds. You can add a visible stamp with your name and the time on any page, or sign invisibly.

Good to Know

A self-signed certificate proves integrity, but readers cannot vouch for who you are until the recipient chooses to trust your certificate; for contracts that need an assured identity, use a certificate from a recognised authority. The signing happens in your browser and the key is never uploaded. For a drawn-style signature use Sign PDF.

Digital Signature — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference from Sign PDF?

Sign PDF places an image of your signature. This tool adds a cryptographic digital signature that detects any later change to the file.

Which certificates work?

PKCS#12 files (.p12 or .pfx) with a private key. If a file was exported with very new encryption and will not open, re-export it with the older 3DES option.

Why does Acrobat say the signer is unverified?

A self-signed certificate is not issued by an authority Acrobat knows. The signature is still valid and tamper-evident; the recipient can add your certificate to their trusted list.

Is my private key uploaded?

No. Signing runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
